High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are the highest-grade filters for practical commercial application in mechanical air ventilation systems.

There are a range of filtration levels under the HEPA umbrella, with the most commonly used being HEPA 13. HEPA 13 filters are particularly prominent in high care and medical applications such as hospitals, laboratories, clean-rooms, pharmaceutical production and some types of food production. Due to the microscopic pore size (0.3 microns) HEPA filters not only capture particles and dust, but also viral clusters or agglomerates. However, smaller viruses can pass through HEPA filters but some of the viral load and hence some of the risk, will be reduced.

To prevent the transmission of COVID-19, we are encouraging our customers to upgrade their air ventilation and filtration systems to mitigate biological transmission risk, as far as is reasonably practicable. This must be within the engineering constraints of their plant and power availability but not to the detriment of airflow so as to improve not only filtration but air velocity too.
